"Kitchen Confidential" is one of those books that grips you from page one. Anthony Bourdain has comprise a selection of personal essays about his life specifically in regards to his journey with the strenuous and punishing life of a Chef de Cuisine.
A.B was such a talented writer; his passion and enthusiasm for food and crazy kitchen and his environment was so palpable that at times I felt like I too was trudging alongside him in the kitchen. This book is broken into numerous chapters that depict everything from his trouble with drugs and story kitchen, to the co-workers that made their mark on him (either good or bad) to what one should consider when ordering certain dishes in a restaurant. It truly was a behind the scenes look at kitchen life and I found myself excited to get a sneak peek into this world that even as a server I'm not always quite indepthly privy too.
If you're not sure if a collection of personal autobiographical essays about a chefs life is for you may I recommend you skip straight to the chapter entitled "A Day in The Life." If by then your still not itching to read more, then we are very different people and I won't be any help to you in recommending a next read. All and all, read this book if you want to travel to a foreign world where the fringe and deranged of society live. Read it if you are frequent restaurant connoisseur and you want to expand your knowledge of the behind the scenes dealings. Read if you work in a restaurant and want comical and frank take of the depraved industry you find yourself in. But most of all read if you are a fan of Anthony Bourdain, because this is the book that started it all and it's truly sad that we won't be able to experience his special brand of honest enthusiasm in the future.
